What Are UTM Parameters?

UTM parameters — short for Urchin Tracking Module — are snippets of text appended to a URL that tell analytics platforms where your traffic came from. When someone clicks a link like https://example.com/page?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email, Google Analytics records the source as "newsletter" and the medium as "email." Without these tags, all your campaign traffic would appear as direct visits, making it impossible to measure which channels actually drive results.

There are five standard UTM parameters. utm_source identifies the platform driving traffic (google, newsletter, twitter). utm_medium defines the channel type (cpc, email, social). utm_campaign names the specific promotion (spring_sale, product_launch). utm_content differentiates links within the same campaign, and utm_term tracks paid keywords.
